We're Hiring a Director of Music & Principal Accompanist
Our longtime Director of Music and Principal Organist is retiring in August and we are beginning the search for the next wonderful minister and musician to fill this role.

Director of Music & Principal Accompanist

Role Description

The Director of Music and Principal Accompanist will join our passionate, high-energy, flexible, faithful, and fun staff team as part of our growing congregation. They will work to sustain and grow our ministries that help us praise God through music and all aspects of worship. The Director will steward the vision for how our congregation and its members worship God and offer praise in song with meaningful music. This position will work with the Worship & Music Team and Lead Pastor to design and implement opportunities to connect with God and one another through worship and music. The Director will provide leadership to all members of the music program of CLC by developing, coordinating, leading, advising, and administering a robust, effective, and well-rounded music program. They will accomplish this by providing leadership to other choir directors, band leaders, staff members, and volunteers involved in the music ministry of CLC. 

Skills, Experience, Education

Preferred

  • A Bachelor's degree in music or sacred music including relevant training/experience in liturgics and worship. Degree requirement may be waived, at the Church Council's discretion, based on factors such as experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with ELCA Lutheran liturgy settings, Lutheran theology and order of worship.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, etc.) and in musical software (Finale). 
  • Possess an appreciation for, and experience with, traditional and contemporary worship music, integrating all musical genres into CLC's music program and at each worship service. 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in playing organ, piano or another instrument suitable for leading congregational worship.

  • Faith and trust in God and the ability to articulate and share that faith with others.
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to leverage these skills to effectively teach music and coordinate other musicians and volunteer leaders
  • Possess strong organizational skills with a particular attention to detail and have the capacity to organize, manage, maintain, and oversee all musical equipment, sheet music, and any other music media in the music library of CLC. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to use the resources available that will assist in the selection of music for each worship service appropriate to the corresponding liturgical season. 
  • Pass a background check 

 

Responsibilities

  • Work with Worship & Music Team Lead Minister and the Pastor(s) to establish and evaluate the vision for the worship life and music ministry of the congregation as well as individual goals and objectives, to be used as criteria for annual performance evaluation.
  • Serve as the principal musician accompanying congregational worship at regularly scheduled worship services as well as occasional special services including but not limited to funerals and weddings.
  • Work with the Worship & Music Team Lead Minister and the Pastor(s) to create a budget and resource plan for the music ministry of the congregation, and manage oversight of such a budget in alignment with the goals and plans for the worship and music ministry.
  • Supervise part time staff (such as the choir director) and volunteers (such as the chime choir director) to lead specific music ministries of the congregation.
  • Plan, coordinate, coach, and lead musicians of a variety of ages and abilities to share their gifts and talents with the congregation, working in alignment with the congregation’s vision that every member is a minister and has God-given gifts to share with the help and support of staff. 
  • Coordinate the preparation and presentation of all music at each worship service, in cooperation with the Pastor(s) and the Worship & Music Team and other staff or key volunteer leaders. 
  • Ensure that all musicians are adequately prepared for participation in worship. 
  • Nurture the musical talents of all congregation members, recruit new members into the music program, and expand the opportunities available for participation in the music program.
  • Serve as the chief advisor and provide support to all parts of the music program including, but not limited to, adult choir, children's choir, angel choir, chime/handbell choir, and praise and worship band. 
  • Arrange for a substitute when unable to perform assigned duties. 
  • Work with all involved in the weekly preparation of the order of service bulletins, to ensure that all hymns and special music are properly notated and listed in the correct order and that they fit with the theme, tone, and purpose of each worship gathering.
  • Assist with other worship and music related activities, tasks, and ministry programs as needed.

 

Specific Position Information

  • Part-time position - this position is part-time; less than 40 hours per week. Total expected number of hours negotiated as part of an employment offer, anticipated to be 20-25.
  • Benefits - may include paid time off (PTO), retirement, and health. No benefits are guaranteed for part-time positions, and will be negotiated as part of an employment offer. 
  • Salary - salary is commensurate to experience, CLC's annual budget, and will be negotiated as part of an employment offer. Expected salary based on $25-30 per hour rate.
  • Pay Increases - there will be an annual performance evaluation process with the possibility of a pay increase which will depend on performance and CLC's annual budget.
